“: More Than Just a Word, a Way of Life.”

Salud, a Spanish word that translates to “health” in English, is more than just a word. It is a way of life, a mindset, and a community that promotes and celebrates wellness. For Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn, Salud has not only been a positive experience, but it has also profoundly impacted his life in more ways than one.
Neil Gajare, a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, is majoring in Health and Societies. Being a part of this program, Salud has been an integral part of his academic journey. He shares, “Salud has opened my eyes to the importance of health and well-being, not just on an individual level but also on a societal level. It has taught me to look beyond the physical aspects of health and understand the social, cultural, and environmental factors that play a crucial role.”
As a student, Neil has taken several Salud courses, which have not only expanded his knowledge but also motivated him to make positive changes in his own life. He says, “Salud has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about my health. From nutrition and exercise to mental health and stress management, Salud has provided me with a holistic approach to wellness.”
But Neil‘s experience with Salud goes beyond the classroom. He is also an active member of the Salud community on campus. He has participated in various events and workshops organized by Salud, which have enhanced his understanding of health and well-being. He shares, “Salud has a vibrant community on campus that organizes events and activities to promote health and wellness. From yoga and meditation sessions to cooking classes and discussions on mental health, Salud has something for everyone.”
One of the most significant impacts Salud has had on Neil is through its focus on diversity and inclusivity. Neil shares, “Salud has a diverse and inclusive approach to health and wellness. It acknowledges that different cultures, communities, and identities have different health needs and concerns. This has helped me to be more understanding and empathetic towards others and their health journeys.”
But what sets Salud apart is its commitment to addressing social justice issues related to health. Neil says, “Salud not only focuses on individual health but also on larger social issues that impact health. It has made me realize that health is a human right and that everyone should have access to quality healthcare regardless of their socioeconomic status, race, or religion.”
Speaking of religion, Neil has also had a positive experience with Salud when it comes to addressing religious diversity. As a Hindu, he has often faced discrimination and stereotypes related to his religion. However, with Salud, Neil has found a safe and inclusive space that celebrates diversity. He shares, “Salud has never made me feel out of place because of my religion. The community is open-minded and respectful towards different beliefs, which has made me feel accepted and comfortable.”
This aspect is particularly crucial for Neil as he has also experienced anti-Semitism on campus. He shares, “In the wake of recent incidents of Anti-Semitic acts on campus, Salud has stood in solidarity with the Jewish community. As a member of the Salud community, I felt supported and seen, and it reaffirmed my belief that Salud is truly committed to inclusivity and social justice.”
Apart from the academic and community aspect, Salud has also provided Neil with invaluable opportunities for personal growth. He has been a part of Salud‘s mentorship program, where he has been able to guide and support his fellow peers on their health journeys. He says, “Being a mentor for Salud has allowed me to develop leadership skills and give back to the community. It has been a rewarding experience to see my mentees make positive changes in their lives and become more aware of their health.”
In conclusion, Salud has not only provided Neil with a holistic approach to health and wellness but has also molded him into an empathetic and socially-conscious individual. He says, “Salud has been a life-changing experience for me. It has taught me the value of health and well-being and has given me the tools to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. I am grateful to be a part of this community, and I hope to continue spreading the message of Salud to others.” With Salud, the possibilities for a healthier and happier life are endless.
