On Tuesday’s episode of CNN’s “AC360,” House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) expressed his concerns about the recent two-week ceasefire in Iran, stating that it is not enough to bring an end to the ongoing war. He also warned that President Trump’s actions could potentially give Iran control of the Strait of Hormuz.
The two-week ceasefire, brokered by the United Nations, was seen as a glimmer of hope in the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. However, Rep. Jeffries believes that this temporary ceasefire is not sufficient in bringing a permanent end to the war.
“We need a permanent end to this war,” Rep. Jeffries stated. “A two-week ceasefire is simply not enough. We need a long-term solution that will bring lasting peace to the region.”
The ongoing tensions between the US and Iran have been escalating since President Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018 and imposed harsh economic sanctions on the country. This has led to a series of retaliatory attacks and increased military presence in the region, raising concerns about a potential war between the two nations.
Rep. Jeffries also expressed his concerns about President Trump’s actions, warning that his decisions could potentially give Iran control of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route for oil and gas exports.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital lifeline for the global economy, and we cannot afford to let Iran gain control of it,” Rep. Jeffries said. “President Trump’s reckless actions could potentially put this crucial shipping route in the hands of our enemies.”
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is a narrow waterway through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas exports pass. Any disruption in the flow of oil through this route could have severe consequences for the global economy.
Rep. Jeffries also criticized President Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal, stating that it has only escalated tensions and put the US and its allies at risk.
“The Iran nuclear deal was a carefully crafted agreement that prevented Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and ensured the safety of the region,” Rep. Jeffries explained. “President Trump’s reckless decision to withdraw from the deal has only made the situation worse and put our allies in danger.”
In conclusion, Rep. Jeffries emphasized the need for a permanent solution to the ongoing conflict and urged President Trump to reconsider his actions. He also called for international cooperation in finding a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
“We cannot afford to continue down this path of escalation and uncertainty,” Rep. Jeffries stated. “It is time for all parties involved to come together and find a lasting solution that will bring peace to the region and ensure the safety of the global economy.”
