Raskin demands DOJ turn over details on settlement with Michael Flynn

Rep. Jamie Raskin (Md.), the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, is taking a stand against the Justice Department’s settlement with Michael Flynn, former National Security Advisor to President Donald Trump. In a statement released on Tuesday, Raskin called for transparency and accountability in the DOJ’s decision to pay $1.25 million to Flynn, arguing that it sets a dangerous precedent for President Trump to continue using taxpayer funds to protect his political allies.

The settlement, reached late last month, required the DOJ to pay Flynn for legal fees and costs related to the Mueller investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. This includes $125,000 for Flynn’s lawyers and $1.1 million for his security clearance revocation costs. The settlement comes after the DOJ dropped its case against Flynn for lying to the FBI about his communications with Russian officials.

But Raskin is not satisfied with the explanation provided by the DOJ for the settlement. In his statement, he highlighted the fact that the settlement contains no admission of guilt from Flynn, and allows him to retain his security clearance. Raskin believes that this sends a message that lying to federal investigators will not be met with consequences, even if it jeopardizes national security.

Furthermore, Raskin points out that the settlement comes at a time when the DOJ is facing severe budget cuts and cannot afford to pay for critical programs and services. He argues that the $1.25 million could have been better used to support the Justice Department’s efforts to uphold the rule of law, instead of rewarding those who have broken it.

But beyond the financial implications, Raskin also expresses concern for the message this settlement sends to President Trump and his associates. He fears that it could be seen as a green light for the President to continue using taxpayer funds to protect his political allies who are involved in the ongoing investigations into his administration.

Raskin goes on to say, “This settlement offers a road map for this epically corrupt President to keep paying out his political underlings with taxpayer funds. It sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the principles of transparency and accountability in our government.”

Raskin’s call for transparency and accountability is not just about this specific settlement, but about the larger implications for our democracy. He believes that it is critical for the American people to know where their tax dollars are being spent and for the government to be held accountable for its actions.

This is not the first time that Raskin has stood up against the Trump administration. As the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, he has been a vocal critic of their policies and actions, and has consistently called for transparency in investigations and decision-making. In this instance, Raskin is once again fighting for what he believes is right and just for the American people.

In conclusion, Rep. Jamie Raskin’s demand for files related to the Flynn settlement is not just a political move, but a moral one. He is standing up for the principles of transparency and accountability that are crucial for a functioning democracy. He is sending a message to the Trump administration that they cannot continue to use taxpayer funds to protect their own interests. It is time for the government to put the American people first and uphold the values that make our country strong.
