Massie: Bondi was ‘afraid to’ look at Epstein survivors at hearing

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) raised eyebrows on Sunday when he suggested that Attorney General Pam Bondi was afraid to look at the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein during her testimony before a House panel.

During an interview on ABC News’s “This Week,” co-host Martha Raddatz asked Massie if he was surprised that Bondi refused to make eye contact with the survivors who were seated behind her during the hearing.

In response, Massie said, “I think it’s because she’s afraid to.”

The statement immediately sparked outrage and criticism from both sides of the political aisle, with many calling it insensitive and inappropriate.

Bondi, who was appearing before the House Judiciary Committee to discuss the handling of the Epstein case, was visibly emotional during the hearing. However, she maintained her composure and did not directly address Massie’s accusation.

The survivors of Epstein’s heinous crimes, who have bravely come forward to share their stories and seek justice, were seated behind Bondi as a show of support and solidarity. They were visibly emotional and many had tears in their eyes as they listened to Bondi’s testimony.

It is deeply disappointing and concerning that a member of Congress would make such a disrespectful and insensitive statement towards these survivors. Bondi, as the chief legal officer of Florida at the time of Epstein’s plea deal, has faced criticism for her handling of the case. However, this does not justify Massie’s derogatory comment towards her or the survivors.

The Epstein case has highlighted the power and influence of the wealthy and well-connected, and the failures of the justice system to protect victims of sexual abuse. It is a case that has raised serious questions about the fairness and impartiality of our legal system.

It is crucial that we do not let politics get in the way of seeking justice for the Epstein survivors. They have already endured unimaginable trauma and should not have to face insensitive comments from lawmakers.

Furthermore, Massie’s accusation also undermines Bondi’s efforts to address the failures in the Epstein case and hold those responsible accountable. She has been a vocal advocate for the survivors and has called for a thorough investigation into the plea deal that allowed Epstein to receive a lenient sentence.

Bondi’s testimony before the House panel was an important step towards understanding the mishandling of the case and ensuring that justice is served for the survivors.

It is important for lawmakers to approach this issue with sensitivity and respect, acknowledging the gravity of the situation and the bravery of the survivors. Making baseless accusations and attacking individuals will not bring us closer to finding the truth and seeking justice.

In conclusion, Rep. Massie’s statement about Attorney General Pam Bondi was uncalled for and disrespectful. It is imperative that lawmakers focus on seeking justice for the Epstein survivors rather than engaging in petty and insensitive remarks. Let us remember the survivors and their stories, and work towards fixing the flaws in our justice system to prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future.
