Jeffries calls Comey indictment ‘disgraceful attack on the rule of law’

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has strongly condemned the recent indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, calling it a “disgraceful attack on the rule of law”. In a statement released on Monday, Jeffries expressed his outrage at the Trump administration’s use of the criminal justice system as a weapon to target political opponents.

“The indictment of James Comey is a disgraceful attack on the rule of law. Donald Trump and his administration have once again shown their blatant disregard for the principles of justice and fairness,” Jeffries stated.

The indictment, which was announced last Friday, accuses Comey of leaking classified information to the media. This charge stems from a memo that Comey wrote after a meeting with President Trump in 2017, in which he documented the President’s request to drop the investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

Jeffries argued that this indictment is a clear attempt by the Trump administration to silence and intimidate those who speak out against their actions. “The criminal justice system has been viciously weaponized by this administration, and it is a dangerous threat to our democracy,” he stated.

He also pointed out the hypocrisy of the Trump administration, which has repeatedly attacked the FBI and the Department of Justice for their handling of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. “This is the same administration that has constantly attacked the FBI and the DOJ for doing their job and upholding the rule of law. Yet, they have no problem using the same system to target their political opponents,” Jeffries stated.

The House Minority Leader also expressed concern over the impact this indictment could have on the integrity of the justice system. “This indictment sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the credibility of our justice system. It sends a message that anyone who speaks out against this administration will be targeted and punished,” he stated.

Jeffries called on his colleagues in Congress to stand up against this abuse of power and defend the rule of law. “It is our duty as elected officials to uphold the principles of justice and protect the integrity of our institutions. We cannot allow the Trump administration to continue to use the criminal justice system as a political tool,” he stated.

He also urged the American people to pay attention to these attacks on the rule of law and hold their elected officials accountable. “We must not let this administration erode the foundations of our democracy. We must stand together and demand accountability for these disgraceful actions,” Jeffries stated.

The House Minority Leader’s statement has been met with support from his fellow Democrats, who have also condemned the indictment of James Comey. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called it a “shameful abuse of power” and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) stated that it “reeks of political retribution”.

The indictment of James Comey is just the latest in a series of attacks on the rule of law by the Trump administration. From firing FBI Director Comey in 2017 to the recent impeachment trial, the President has continuously shown a disregard for the principles of justice and fairness.

It is crucial that we, as a nation, stand up against these attacks and defend the rule of law. As Hakeem Jeffries stated, “The rule of law is the bedrock of our democracy and we must do everything in our power to protect it.” Let us hope that his words will inspire action and lead to a stronger and more just America.
