Teachers’ Day 2025: Date, History And Significance Of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s Birth Anniversary

Teachers play a crucial role in shaping the future of our society. They are the ones who guide and nurture young minds, imparting knowledge and values that stay with us for a lifetime. It is only fitting that we celebrate and honor these unsung heroes on a special day dedicated to them. Every year, on 5th September, we celebrate Teacher’s Day in India to pay tribute to the selfless and dedicated teachers who have made a significant impact on our lives. However, this year’s Teacher’s Day is even more special as we celebrate it in the year 2025, marking the 150th birth anniversary of the revered philosopher and the second President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was not just a great teacher but also a renowned philosopher, scholar, and statesman. He was born on 5th September 1888 in a small village in Andhra Pradesh. His father was a humble school teacher, and from a young age, Radhakrishnan showed a keen interest in academics. He was a brilliant student and received his education from some of the most prestigious institutions in India, including Madras Christian College, University of Calcutta, and University of Oxford. He went on to become a professor of philosophy at the University of Calcutta, Mysore University, and Oxford University. In 1931, he became the Vice Chancellor of Andhra University, and in 1939, he was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. His contributions to the field of education and philosophy were immense, and he was widely respected and admired by his students and peers alike.

Dr. Radhakrishnan’s teachings were not limited to the classroom; he believed in the holistic development of his students. He emphasized the importance of moral values and character building, along with academic excellence. He believed that education should not only focus on acquiring knowledge but also on developing a sense of responsibility towards society. He was a firm believer in the power of education to bring about positive changes in the world, and he dedicated his life to spreading this message.

In 1962, when he was the second President of India, his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, 5th September, as a mark of gratitude and respect. In response, Dr. Radhakrishnan said, “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers’ Day.” This gesture reflects his humility and his deep love for his profession. Since then, 5th September has been celebrated as Teacher’s Day in India, and it is a day when students express their gratitude and appreciation for their teachers.

On this special occasion of Teacher’s Day 2025, let us take a moment to reflect on the role of teachers in our lives. Our teachers have not only taught us academic subjects but have also instilled in us values and morals that have shaped us into the individuals we are today. They have inspired us to dream big and have always been there to guide us towards our goals. They have been our mentors, our friends, and our role models. Today, as we celebrate this day, let us thank our teachers for their unwavering support and guidance.

In the past year, the world has faced unprecedented challenges due to the global pandemic. The education sector has been greatly affected, and teachers have been at the forefront of adapting to new ways of teaching and ensuring that learning continues for their students. They have gone above and beyond their call of duty, using technology and innovative methods to make sure that their students do not miss out on their education. They have proved that nothing can stop them from fulfilling their duties towards their students and society.

As we celebrate Teacher’s Day 2025, let us also take this opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of all the teachers who have been working tirelessly to make sure that education reaches every student, regardless of the circumstances. Let us appreciate their dedication and commitment to their profession. The theme for this year’s Teacher’s Day is “Empowering Teachers, Building Sustainable Societies.” This theme emphasizes the important role of teachers in shaping a better and sustainable future for our society. It also highlights the need to provide teachers with the necessary support and resources to continue their noble work.

On this day, various events and programs are organized in schools and colleges to honor
