Greene urges Trump to commute George Santos’ sentence: ‘It’s time to correct this injustice’

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is known for her outspoken and controversial views, but her recent actions have shown a different side of her. In a surprising move, Greene has urged the Trump administration to commute the sentence of former Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.), who was sentenced to seven years in prison earlier this year for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

Greene shared a letter on Monday in a post on Twitter, addressed to the Office of the Pardon Attorney, in which she expressed her support for Santos and urged for his sentence to be commuted. In the letter, Greene highlighted Santos’ service to his country as a Marine and his dedication to his community as a former congressman.

“Mr. Santos has served his country with honor and distinction as a Marine, and has continued to serve his community as a dedicated public servant. It is my belief that his sentence is excessive and does not reflect the true character of the man I have come to know,” Greene wrote.

Santos, who served as a congressman from 2019 to 2021, was convicted of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in February of this year. He was accused of using campaign funds for personal expenses and falsifying records to cover it up. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to seven years in prison.

However, Greene believes that Santos’ sentence is too harsh and does not take into account his years of service and dedication to his country and community. She also pointed out that Santos has taken full responsibility for his actions and has shown remorse for his mistakes.

“I have had the opportunity to get to know Mr. Santos and I can attest to his character and integrity. He has taken full responsibility for his actions and has shown genuine remorse. I believe that he has learned from his mistakes and is committed to making amends,” Greene wrote in her letter.

Greene’s call for clemency for Santos has received mixed reactions, with some praising her for standing up for a fellow Republican and others criticizing her for supporting someone who has been convicted of a crime. However, Greene remains steadfast in her belief that Santos deserves a second chance.

“I understand that some may disagree with my decision to support Mr. Santos, but I believe in redemption and second chances. Mr. Santos has paid a heavy price for his mistakes and I believe that he deserves the opportunity to rebuild his life and continue to serve his community,” Greene said.

Greene’s letter to the Office of the Pardon Attorney comes at a time when the Trump administration is considering a number of pardons and commutations before the end of President Trump’s term. While it is ultimately up to the president to decide on clemency, Greene’s support for Santos may carry weight as she is a vocal supporter of President Trump and a member of the Republican party.

In conclusion, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s call for clemency for former Rep. George Santos has sparked a debate, but it also highlights her belief in redemption and second chances. Greene’s letter to the Office of the Pardon Attorney shows her willingness to stand up for what she believes is right, even if it may not be a popular decision. As the Trump administration considers clemency for Santos, it remains to be seen if Greene’s efforts will have an impact.
