Maryland lawmaker says he was denied access to Abrego Garcia

Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-Md.) recently traveled to El Salvador to check in on one of his constituents, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported by the federal government earlier this year. However, upon his arrival, Ivey was denied access to meet with Abrego Garcia, causing frustration and concern for the congressman.

Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national, had been living in the United States for over a decade and had built a life for himself in Maryland. However, due to a clerical error, he was wrongfully deported back to El Salvador in January. This mistake not only uprooted Abrego Garcia’s life, but it also separated him from his family and community in the United States.

Upon learning of Abrego Garcia’s situation, Rep. Ivey took immediate action to help his constituent. He traveled to El Salvador to meet with Abrego Garcia and ensure that he was receiving proper care and support. However, upon his arrival, Ivey was denied access to meet with Abrego Garcia by Salvadoran authorities.

In a statement, Rep. Ivey expressed his disappointment and frustration, stating, “I am deeply disappointed that I was denied access to meet with my constituent, Kilmar Abrego Garcia. As a congressman, it is my duty to ensure the well-being of my constituents, especially in a situation as dire as this.”

Ivey’s visit to El Salvador was not only to check on Abrego Garcia, but also to address the larger issue of wrongful deportations. He met with Salvadoran officials to discuss ways to prevent similar mistakes from happening in the future and to advocate for Abrego Garcia’s return to the United States.

Abrego Garcia’s case is just one example of the flawed immigration system in the United States. It highlights the need for comprehensive immigration reform and the importance of protecting the rights of immigrants.

Despite the setback, Rep. Ivey remains determined to help Abrego Garcia and other wrongfully deported individuals. He has vowed to continue fighting for Abrego Garcia’s return to the United States and for a fair and just immigration system.

In the meantime, Abrego Garcia’s family and community in Maryland are rallying behind him, advocating for his return and showing their support for Rep. Ivey’s efforts. They have started a petition and are actively raising awareness about Abrego Garcia’s case.

The denial of Rep. Ivey’s visit to El Salvador may have been a setback, but it has only strengthened his resolve to fight for justice for Abrego Garcia and others like him. It is heartening to see a congressman who is truly dedicated to serving his constituents and standing up for what is right.

As we continue to push for comprehensive immigration reform, let us not forget the individuals like Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who have been wrongfully affected by the current system. Let us also commend and support leaders like Rep. Ivey, who are tirelessly working to make a positive change in the lives of their constituents.
