OTD in 2016: WI icon Chris Gayle fined $10,000 in BBL for inappropriate behaviour

In a throwback to 2016, on this very day cricket luminary Chris Gayle faced a $10,000 fine from the Melbourne Renegades for what cricket authorities criticized as a “completely out of line” comment directed at a female presenter during a live TV interview. The incident unfolded after Gayle’s impressive performance, scoring 41 runs off 15 balls in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL).

In the interview, Gayle attempted to flirt with Ten Network reporter Mel McLaughlin, inviting her for a drink and making remarks about her appearance. Despite Gayle later asserting it was a joke, the comments were widely condemned as inappropriate.

“To see your eyes for the first time is nice. Hopefully we can have a drink afterwards. Don’t blush baby,” he said.

Cricket Australia and Big Bash League officials, led by Cricket Australia chief James Sutherland, denounced Gayle’s behaviour, emphasizing the inappropriateness of such comments in a professional setting. Sutherland expressed solidarity with McLaughlin, asserting that no one should have to endure such remarks. He underscored the gravity of Gayle’s actions, stating that his behaviour was not acceptable.

Responding promptly, the Melbourne Renegades imposed a $10,000 fine on Gayle, signalling a firm stance against inappropriate conduct. This revisitation to the 2016 incident serves as a reminder of ongoing efforts to promote a respectful and inclusive environment within the cricketing community.
