On Thursday’s episode of CNN’s “Situation Room,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) placed the blame for the ongoing shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) squarely on the shoulders of Republicans. According to Schumer, Democrats have been eager to pass legislation to fund the DHS, but it was the GOP who “held it up” in order to push for changes to the agencies under the department.
The shutdown, which began on December 22nd, has left over 800,000 federal employees without pay and has caused disruptions in vital services such as airport security and border protection. Despite repeated efforts by Democrats to pass a bill that would provide funding and end the shutdown, Republicans have refused to budge on their demands for increased funding for President Trump’s proposed border wall.
In his interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Schumer explained the Democrats’ position on the DHS funding bill. “We have no problem funding the DHS,” he said. “In fact, we passed a continuing resolution in December that would have kept the department running without any changes. It’s the Republicans who have blocked this funding in order to try and get their way on immigration policies.”
Schumer’s statement rings true, as Democrats have consistently expressed their willingness to fund the DHS and have even proposed a compromise that would provide additional funding for border security measures, such as increased use of technology and additional personnel.
However, Republicans have remained steadfast in their insistence on including $5.7 billion for a border wall, a project that has been highly controversial and has not gained enough support from either party to pass. As a result, the government shutdown has dragged on for over a month, causing significant hardship for federal workers and their families.
But according to Schumer, the real reason for the impasse lies with the GOP and their attempt to use the DHS funding as leverage for their own political agenda. “We have tried to negotiate with the president and the Republicans on a compromise that would end the shutdown and secure our borders, but they have refused to come to the table,” he explained. “They would rather hold the DHS hostage to their demands for an ineffective and expensive wall rather than work towards a solution that benefits all Americans.”
In addition to the issue of funding for the border wall, Democrats have also raised concerns about the treatment of individuals held under the custody of the agencies under the DHS, such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). These agencies have come under fire in recent months for their treatment of immigrants and asylum seekers, including reports of family separations and inadequate medical care for individuals in their custody.
Schumer firmly stated that Democrats are committed to addressing these concerns in any funding bill for the DHS. “We believe in securing our borders, but we also believe in treating all individuals with dignity and respect, regardless of their immigration status,” he said. “It’s time for Republicans to stop using the DHS as a bargaining chip and work towards a solution that reflects our American values.”
As the government shutdown continues with no end in sight, it’s clear that the responsibility for this impasse lies with the Republican party. Their unwillingness to compromise and their attempt to use the DHS funding as a means to push their own agenda has resulted in a damaging and unnecessary shutdown that is affecting the lives of countless Americans.
It’s time for the GOP to put aside their political games and work towards finding a solution that will end the shutdown and provide funding for the vital services of the DHS. As Schumer stated, “The shutdown is on the shoulders of the Republicans. They need to take responsibility and come to the table to find a way forward.”
