Moulton: Trump ‘resorting to war crimes’ to get out of Iran war

Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts has strongly condemned President Trump’s recent threats against Iran, calling them “war crimes” and warning of the dangerous consequences that could follow.

In a speech to the nation on Wednesday evening, President Trump threatened to decimate Iran’s energy infrastructure and send the regime “back to the Stone Ages” in retaliation for their alleged involvement in recent attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman. The president’s aggressive stance has sparked widespread concern and criticism, with many fearing that it could lead to an all-out war between the two nations.

Rep. Moulton, a former Marine Corps officer and a member of the House Armed Services Committee, has been a vocal opponent of the Trump administration’s foreign policy decisions. In a statement released on Thursday, he expressed his deep concern over the president’s actions and accused him of resorting to war crimes.

“He’s kicked the hornet’s nest, he’s playing with fire, and he’s putting American lives at risk,” Rep. Moulton said. “Threatening to destroy a country’s energy infrastructure and send them back to the Stone Ages is not only reckless, but it also goes against the basic principles of international law.”

The congressman also pointed out the hypocrisy of President Trump’s approach, noting that just a few weeks ago, he had called off a military strike on Iran because he believed it would cause too many casualties. “Now, he’s threatening to inflict even greater harm on the Iranian people. This is not how a responsible leader should behave,” Rep. Moulton stated.

The tensions between the US and Iran have been escalating since President Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposed harsh sanctions on the country. The recent attacks on oil tankers have only added fuel to the fire, with the US and its allies blaming Iran for the incidents. However, Iran has denied any involvement and has accused the US of trying to provoke a war.

Rep. Moulton’s criticism of the president’s actions has been echoed by many of his fellow Democrats, as well as some Republicans. They have called for a more diplomatic approach and have urged the administration to exhaust all other options before resorting to military action.

“It’s time for the Trump administration to engage in meaningful dialogue with Iran and work towards finding a peaceful resolution to this crisis,” Rep. Moulton said. “We cannot afford to rush into another costly and devastating war in the Middle East.”

The congressman also stressed the importance of Congress playing a role in any decision to go to war. “The Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war, and we cannot let the president make such a grave decision without our input,” he stated.

As tensions continue to rise between the US and Iran, it is crucial for our leaders to exercise caution and restraint. Threatening to commit war crimes and escalate the situation further is not the answer. We must work towards finding a peaceful solution and avoid the devastating consequences of another war. As citizens, it is our responsibility to hold our leaders accountable and demand that they prioritize diplomacy over aggression.
