Delhi HC Seeks Mahua Moitra’s Stand on Lawyer’s Plea Over Custody of Pet

The Delhi High Court has recently sought the stand of Mahua Moitra, a Member of Parliament, on a lawyer’s plea seeking custody of her pet dog. The plea was filed by advocate Anjali Sharma, who claims to have been taking care of the dog for the past few years.

The court has issued a notice to Moitra, who is a Trinamool Congress MP from West Bengal, and has asked her to respond to the plea within four weeks. The matter has been listed for further hearing on August 16.

According to the plea, the dog named ‘Chhotu’ was rescued by Sharma from the streets of Delhi in 2018. She claims that she has been taking care of the dog ever since and has even got him vaccinated and registered with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Sharma further states that she had to leave the dog in Moitra’s care temporarily due to some personal reasons. However, when she went to collect the dog, she was informed that Moitra had taken him to her hometown in West Bengal and was not willing to return him.

The lawyer has also alleged that Moitra has been avoiding her calls and messages, and has even blocked her on social media. She has also claimed that Moitra has been threatening her with legal action if she continues to pursue the matter.

In her plea, Sharma has requested the court to direct Moitra to return the dog to her custody and also sought compensation for the expenses she has incurred in taking care of him.

The court’s decision to seek Moitra’s stand on the matter has raised questions about the ownership of pets and the rights of those who take care of them. It is heartening to see that the court has taken cognizance of this issue and is willing to hear both sides before making a decision.

Pets are not just animals, they are a part of our families. They provide us with unconditional love and companionship, and it is our responsibility to take care of them. In this case, it is evident that Sharma has been taking good care of the dog and has even gone through the necessary procedures to ensure his well-being.

It is also important to note that pets are not mere objects that can be passed on from one person to another. They have emotions and attachments, and it is not fair to disrupt their lives by taking them away from their caregivers without a valid reason.

Moreover, it is heart-wrenching to see that the issue has reached the court, and the two parties are unable to come to a mutual understanding. It is hoped that Moitra will respond to the court’s notice and the matter will be resolved amicably.

In recent times, there has been a rise in the number of cases where pets are caught in legal battles between their owners and caregivers. This highlights the need for a proper legal framework to address such issues and protect the rights of pets and their caregivers.

In conclusion, the Delhi High Court’s decision to seek Mahua Moitra’s stand on the matter is a positive step towards finding a solution that is in the best interest of the dog. It is hoped that the matter will be resolved soon, and Chhotu will be reunited with his caregiver, Anjali Sharma. Let us all remember that pets are not just animals, they are a part of our families, and their well-being should be our top priority.
