Shivakumar Seeks Centre’s Intervention Amid Tensions With Andhra Over Alamatti Dam Height Expansion

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar Urges Union Government to Address Andhra Pradesh’s Objections to Raising Alamatti Dam Height

In a recent development, Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar has urged the Union Government to address the objections raised by Andhra Pradesh regarding the proposed increase in the height of Alamatti dam. The move comes after Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed concerns over the potential impact of the project on the state.

The Alamatti dam, which is located on the Krishna river, plays a crucial role in providing irrigation water to both Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The proposed project aims to raise the height of the dam by 8 meters, which would increase the storage capacity of the reservoir and help in meeting the growing water demands of the two states.

However, the Andhra Pradesh government has raised concerns over the project, stating that it would submerge several villages and displace thousands of people. CM Reddy has also alleged that the project would adversely affect the flow of the river and cause harm to the ecology of the region.

In light of these objections, Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar has stepped in to mediate the issue and find a solution that would benefit both states. He has stated that the increase in the dam’s height is crucial for Karnataka, as it would help in providing water for irrigation and address the state’s water scarcity problem.

Furthermore, he has assured that Karnataka is willing to work with Andhra Pradesh and address their concerns. He has also suggested setting up a joint committee comprising officials from both states to study the impact of the project and come up with a mutually beneficial solution.

The Deputy CM has also highlighted the fact that the project has been approved by the Central Water Commission and is in line with the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal’s award. He has urged the Union Government to intervene and address the objections raised by Andhra Pradesh, in order to ensure the smooth implementation of the project.

Moreover, DK Shivakumar has emphasized the importance of the project for the overall development of the region. The increase in the dam’s height would not only benefit the farmers but also boost the industrial sector and provide much-needed employment opportunities.

The Deputy CM has also pointed out that Karnataka has already made significant investments in the project and any delay in its execution would result in a huge loss for the state. He has urged the Union Government to take swift action and resolve the issue at the earliest.

In conclusion, the proposed increase in the Alamatti dam’s height is a crucial project that holds immense potential for the development of both Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It is heartening to see the Deputy CM taking proactive steps to address the concerns raised by Andhra Pradesh and work towards finding a solution that would benefit all stakeholders involved.

It is now up to the Union Government to take the necessary steps and ensure that the project is implemented in a timely and efficient manner. Let us hope that the two states can come to an amicable resolution and work together towards the progress and prosperity of the region.
