House to reconvene Jan. 6 panel for 5-year anniversary hearing

Democrats Plan to Reconvene House Select Committee for Fifth Anniversary of Capitol Riot

As the fifth anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot approaches, Democrats are planning to hold a special hearing to commemorate the event and continue their efforts to hold those responsible accountable. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has sent a “Dear Colleague” letter to members of the House, inviting them to provide testimony at the hearing, which is set to take place on the anniversary itself.

The Jan. 6 riot, which saw a mob of supporters of then-President Donald Trump storm the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election, was a dark day in American history. It was a blatant attack on our democracy and the peaceful transfer of power, and it left a lasting scar on our nation. In the aftermath, a House select committee was formed to investigate the events leading up to and during the riot, and now, five years later, Democrats are determined to continue their work.

In his letter, Rep. Jeffries emphasized the importance of remembering and reflecting on the events of Jan. 6, stating, “We must never forget what happened on that day and the impact it had on our country. It is our duty to honor the bravery of those who defended the Capitol and to ensure that such an attack on our democracy never happens again.”

The hearing, which is otherwise slated to focus on the security failures that allowed the riot to occur, will now also include testimony from members of Congress who were present during the attack. This will provide a unique opportunity for lawmakers to share their personal experiences and perspectives on that fateful day.

The decision to reconvene the House select committee has been met with support from Democrats, who see it as a necessary step in holding those responsible accountable. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), who chairs the committee, stated, “We cannot let the events of Jan. 6 fade into the background. We must continue to investigate and uncover the truth, and this hearing is an important part of that process.”

The hearing will also serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to address the root causes of the Jan. 6 riot. Democrats have been pushing for a thorough investigation into the role that former President Trump played in inciting the violence, as well as the actions of his supporters and any potential ties to extremist groups. This hearing will provide a platform for these issues to be addressed and for the truth to be brought to light.

In addition to the hearing, Democrats are also planning a series of events and activities to mark the fifth anniversary of the Capitol riot. These include a memorial service for the lives lost during the attack, as well as a moment of silence on the House floor. These events will serve as a powerful reminder of the gravity of the events that took place on Jan. 6 and the need to continue working towards a more just and equitable society.

While the Jan. 6 riot was a dark moment in our nation’s history, it also brought to light the resilience and strength of our democracy. Despite the chaos and violence, Congress was able to reconvene and certify the results of the 2020 election, reaffirming the peaceful transfer of power. As we approach the fifth anniversary, it is important to remember this and to continue fighting for the values that make our country great.

In his letter, Rep. Jeffries also urged his colleagues to use this opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been made since the Jan. 6 riot and to recommit to the work that still needs to be done. He stated, “We have come a long way, but there is still much work to be done. Let us use this anniversary as a reminder of our duty to protect our democracy and ensure that all Americans are treated with dignity and respect.”

In the face of adversity, Democrats are showing their determination to uphold the values of our nation and to continue working towards a better future. The reconvening of the House select committee and the events planned for the fifth anniversary of the Capitol riot are a testament to this commitment. Let us all join together in remembering and honoring the events of Jan. 6, and in working towards a stronger and more united America.
