Fort Lewis College senior Jonah Flynn is not your typical college conservative. Before becoming president of the newly formed Turning Point USA chapter at FLC, Flynn described himself as a liberal-leaning atheist. But his journey to conservatism and leadership is one that has gained local and national attention.
Flynn, a senior studying philosophy and Spanish, was initially drawn to liberal ideologies in his youth. Growing up in a predominantly liberal community, he found himself aligning with progressive views on social issues and government policies. However, as he delved deeper into his studies, Flynn began to question his beliefs and seek out alternative perspectives.
It was during his sophomore year at Fort Lewis College that Flynn discovered Turning Point USA, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting conservative principles on college campuses. The organization’s mission to educate students on free market economics, limited government, and individual liberty struck a chord with Flynn. He started attending Turning Point meetings and events, and soon found himself becoming more involved in the organization.
Despite facing backlash from his peers for his newfound conservative views, Flynn remained committed to challenging the status quo and promoting open-minded discourse on campus. He believes that college is a time for students to engage in critical thinking and explore different perspectives, regardless of their own personal beliefs.
In the fall of 2020, Flynn took the initiative to start a Turning Point chapter at FLC, becoming the first president of the chapter. The decision was met with both support and criticism, but Flynn remained determined to create a platform for conservative students on campus.
Since its inception, the FLC Turning Point chapter has hosted a variety of events and discussions, including guest speakers, debates, and community service projects. Flynn’s leadership and dedication have helped the chapter gain recognition and support not only on campus but also on a national level.
Flynn’s journey from a liberal-leaning atheist to a conservative leader has not been without challenges. He has faced backlash and criticism from those who may not agree with his views, but he remains steadfast in his beliefs and his commitment to promoting open dialogue and critical thinking.
In an interview with a local news outlet, Flynn stated, “I want to show people that it’s okay to have different beliefs and to challenge the status quo. We should be able to have civil discussions and debates without resorting to name-calling or violence.”
His message of tolerance and open-mindedness has resonated with many on campus, and the FLC Turning Point chapter continues to grow in membership and influence.
Despite his busy schedule as a senior and chapter president, Flynn remains focused on his studies and is set to graduate in the spring of 2021. He hopes to use his degree in philosophy and Spanish to continue promoting conservative principles and encouraging critical thinking in his future endeavors.
Flynn’s journey at Fort Lewis College has been anything but ordinary. From a liberal-leaning atheist to a conservative leader, he has shown that it is possible to embrace different beliefs and find common ground through respectful discourse. His dedication and passion for promoting open-mindedness and critical thinking are an inspiration to his peers and a reminder of the importance of diversity of thought on college campuses.
As he prepares to graduate and move onto the next chapter of his life, Flynn’s legacy at Fort Lewis College will be one of courage, leadership, and a commitment to challenging the status quo. He is a shining example of what it means to be a true leader, and his impact on the FLC community will continue to be felt for years to come.
