As the federal shutdown enters its second month, a new survey has revealed that the majority of voters are placing the blame on either President Trump or the Republican Party. According to an NBC News poll conducted in late October, 52 percent of voters hold Trump and/or the Republican Party responsible for the ongoing shutdown.
The survey, which was conducted among a diverse group of voters, highlights the growing frustration and dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in the United States. With no end in sight to the shutdown, which has now become the longest in US history, the American people are feeling the impact of the political impasse.
The survey results show that 25 percent of voters solely blame President Trump for the shutdown, while 27 percent hold the Republican Party accountable. This is a significant increase from a similar poll conducted in September, where only 18 percent of voters placed the blame on Trump and 21 percent on the Republican Party.
The remaining 48 percent of voters believe that both Trump and the Republican Party are equally responsible for the shutdown. This sentiment is shared by both Democrats and Republicans, with 85 percent of Democrats and 68 percent of Republicans holding this view.
The federal shutdown, which began on December 22, 2018, has left hundreds of thousands of federal employees without pay and has also affected various government services and programs. The impasse stems from a disagreement between President Trump and Congress over funding for a border wall along the US-Mexico border.
President Trump has repeatedly demanded $5.7 billion for the construction of the wall, while Democrats have refused to approve any funding for the project. This has led to a stalemate, with both sides refusing to budge from their positions.
The survey also revealed that the majority of voters do not support the idea of using a national emergency declaration to fund the border wall. Only 36 percent of voters believe that Trump should declare a national emergency to secure funding for the wall, while 51 percent are against the idea.
The ongoing shutdown has also taken a toll on President Trump’s approval ratings, with 53 percent of voters disapproving of his handling of the situation. This is a significant increase from September, where only 43 percent of voters disapproved of Trump’s handling of the shutdown.
The survey results also show that the American people are growing increasingly concerned about the impact of the shutdown on the country’s economy. 60 percent of voters believe that the shutdown will have a negative effect on the economy, while only 21 percent believe it will have a positive impact.
As the shutdown continues, the American people are looking to their leaders to find a solution and end the political impasse. The survey results clearly show that the majority of voters are holding President Trump and the Republican Party responsible for the ongoing shutdown.
It is time for our leaders to put aside their differences and work towards finding a solution that will benefit the American people. The federal shutdown has already caused enough hardship and it is time for our elected officials to fulfill their responsibilities and put an end to this crisis.
In the words of President John F. Kennedy, “Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future.” It is time for our leaders to take responsibility and find a way to end the shutdown for the betterment of our nation.
