Jeffries: Trump hasn’t given Johnson ‘permission’ to meet over shutdown

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has accused President Trump of not granting House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Republicans “permission” to negotiate about the ongoing government shutdown, which has now entered its 13th day. In an interview with MSNBC on Monday, Jeffries stated that the lack of communication between the two parties is due to Trump’s refusal to allow them to meet and discuss a resolution.

“Speaker Mike Johnson and I have not met because Donald Trump has not given them permission to meet,” Jeffries told MSNBC. “We have a situation where the President is holding the American people hostage and preventing us from doing our jobs as elected officials.”

The government shutdown, which began on December 22nd, has left hundreds of thousands of federal workers without pay and has caused disruptions in various government services. The shutdown was triggered by a disagreement between Trump and Congress over funding for a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump has demanded $5 billion for the wall, while Democrats have refused to approve any funding for it.

Despite the shutdown, Trump has remained adamant about his demand for the border wall and has refused to budge on his stance. This has led to a stalemate between the two parties, with no end to the shutdown in sight.

In the midst of this political standoff, Jeffries has called out Trump for not allowing Republicans to negotiate with Democrats. He believes that this is a clear indication of Trump’s lack of leadership and his unwillingness to find a solution to the shutdown.

“President Trump is not acting like a leader. He is acting like a dictator, refusing to allow his own party to engage in discussions with the opposition,” Jeffries stated. “This is not how our government is supposed to function. We need to come together and find a solution to this crisis, but Trump is preventing that from happening.”

Jeffries also criticized Trump for his failure to understand the impact of the shutdown on the American people. He pointed out that many federal workers are struggling to make ends meet without their paychecks and that the longer the shutdown continues, the more it will affect the economy.

“The President needs to understand that this shutdown is not just about politics. It’s about real people and their livelihoods,” Jeffries said. “We cannot continue to hold the American people hostage over a political disagreement. It’s time for Trump to put the needs of the country first and end this shutdown.”

Jeffries’ comments have sparked a debate about Trump’s leadership and his handling of the government shutdown. Many have criticized the President for his refusal to negotiate and for causing unnecessary harm to the American people.

In response to Jeffries’ remarks, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders stated that Trump is open to negotiations but will not back down on his demand for the border wall. She also accused Democrats of being unwilling to compromise and of playing politics with the shutdown.

As the shutdown continues, the pressure is mounting on both parties to find a solution. The longer it goes on, the more it will affect the lives of ordinary Americans and the economy as a whole. It’s time for Trump to put aside his ego and allow for meaningful discussions to take place. The American people deserve better than being caught in the middle of a political standoff. It’s time for our leaders to come together and find a solution to end this shutdown.
