Ocasio-Cortez ‘very concerned’ about Democrats withholding Mamdani endorsement

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) expressed her concerns on Thursday regarding the lack of support from her fellow party members for New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani. Speaking to reporters outside the Capitol, Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the importance of setting a positive example within the party.

“I am very concerned about the example that is being set by anybody in our party,” Ocasio-Cortez stated. “I believe that we must set the standard for supporting our fellow Democrats, especially during crucial elections like the one for New York City mayor.”

Mamdani, a progressive candidate who has been endorsed by Ocasio-Cortez, is running against incumbent Mayor Bill de Blasio in the Democratic primary. Despite his progressive values and grassroots campaign, Mamdani has not received the same level of support from the Democratic establishment as de Blasio.

Ocasio-Cortez’s comments came after reports surfaced that some Democratic officials were actively working against Mamdani’s campaign, despite the party’s official endorsement of him. This behavior goes against the principles of unity and solidarity within the party, which Ocasio-Cortez believes are crucial for success.

“As Democrats, we must stand together and support our candidates, regardless of personal opinions or agendas,” she stressed. “It is not about individual preferences, but about the greater good and what is best for our constituents. We cannot afford to have a divided party, especially during such a crucial election.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s concerns are not unwarranted. The Democratic Party has a history of infighting and division, which has often resulted in lost elections and weakened positions. As the party continues to evolve and embrace progressive values, it is important to maintain a united front and support candidates who align with those values.

Moreover, Ocasio-Cortez’s support for Mamdani goes beyond just party loyalty. As a fellow progressive, she sees the potential and passion in his campaign and believes in his ability to bring much-needed change to New York City.

“Zohran Mamdani represents the future of our party and our country,” Ocasio-Cortez affirmed. “His platform is centered around issues that truly matter to everyday New Yorkers, such as affordable housing, criminal justice reform, and equitable education. These are the values that we, as Democrats, should be fighting for.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s words serve as a reminder to her party members to put aside personal differences and come together in support of a candidate who truly represents the people. In a time where our country is facing numerous challenges, it is crucial to have strong, progressive leaders like Mamdani in positions of power.

As the Democratic primary for New York City mayor approaches, Ocasio-Cortez’s message is clear: unity and support for progressive candidates are essential for the party’s success. Let us heed her words and work towards a stronger, more united Democratic Party, and a better future for all.
