Van Jones: I’m ‘Fighting for Process and Procedure’ of Checks and Balances in Way I Usually Don’t

On Friday’s broadcast of “CNN NewsNight,” political commentator and activist Van Jones opened up about his new perspective on the importance of checks and balances in our democracy.

Jones, known for his passionate and sometimes combative nature, stunned viewers when he admitted to being at “a new point in my life where I’m fighting for process and procedure.” He went on to explain that he usually isn’t this interested in the inner workings of our government, but recent events have caused him to change his focus.

Jones acknowledged the growing concern amongst Americans about the state of our democracy and the potential threats to our checks and balances. He stated that it’s not just about policies and party lines, but about protecting the core foundations of our democratic system.

“For years, I’ve been fighting for causes that I believe in and advocating for certain policies. But now, I realize that none of that means anything if we don’t have a strong and functioning system of checks and balances in place,” Jones said.

He went on to express his surprise at his own sudden shift in priorities, saying, “I never thought I’d be fighting for process and procedure, but here we are. It just goes to show that times are changing and we all need to adapt and evolve with them.”

Jones emphasized the importance of checks and balances in ensuring that no one branch of government has too much power. He pointed out that even those in positions of authority need to be held accountable, and the only way to do that is through proper checks and balances.

“Our founding fathers put these systems in place for a reason, to prevent any one person or group from dominating and potentially abusing their power. We need to remember and respect that,” Jones stated.

He also addressed the recent events involving the Trump administration and the ongoing investigation into possible collusion with Russia. Jones made it clear that this is not about taking sides or pushing a political agenda, but about upholding the principles of democracy.

“This is not about Democrats or Republicans. It’s about saving our democracy. We must demand a fair and thorough investigation, and those in positions of power must be held accountable if any wrongdoing is found,” Jones urged.

He concluded his passionate segment by encouraging viewers to take an active role in fighting for checks and balances in our government. “We all have a responsibility to protect the institutions that make our country great. We can’t take them for granted. We must be vigilant and demand accountability from our leaders,” Jones said.

In a time of heightened political tension and division, Van Jones’ call for a renewed focus on checks and balances serves as a reminder that our democracy is worth fighting for. And as citizens, we must all come together to protect it.
