Ganesh Chaturthi 2025: How To Perform Ganpati Sthapana At Home – Step‑By‑Step Guide

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most beloved and widely celebrated festivals in India. It marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the harbinger of good fortune. This year, due to the ongoing pandemic, many of us may not be able to visit temples or participate in public celebrations. However, that should not stop us from welcoming Lord Ganesha into our homes and hearts. In this article, we will guide you on how to perform Ganesh Sthapana at home, so you can celebrate this auspicious occasion with your family and loved ones.

Step 1: Preparations
Before starting the Ganpati Sthapana, it is essential to make all the necessary preparations. This includes cleaning and decorating the house, buying the required puja items, and preparing prasad. It is also advisable to take a bath and wear clean clothes before beginning the rituals.

Step 2: Choosing the Right Idol
The idol of Lord Ganesha is the most crucial aspect of Ganesh Sthapana. You can either buy a clay or eco-friendly idol from the market or make one at home using turmeric or sand. It is essential to choose an idol that is in a sitting position, as it represents stability and peace. Also, make sure that the idol is not too big, as it can be challenging to perform the rituals on a large idol at home.

Step 3: Setting up the Puja Thali
The puja thali or plate is an essential part of the Ganesh Sthapana ritual. It should contain all the necessary items like a diya (lamp), incense sticks, flowers, fruits, sweets, and a small kalash (pot). You can also add other items like coconut, betel leaves, and turmeric powder to the thali.

Step 4: Ganesh Sthapana Ritual
On the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, start by placing a clean cloth or red cloth on a raised platform or chowki. Then, place the idol of Lord Ganesha on the cloth. Before placing the idol, apply a tilak of turmeric and kumkum on it. Then, tie a sacred thread or mauli around the idol’s wrist and offer flowers and akshat (unbroken rice) on the idol.

Step 5: Kalash Sthapana
Next, fill the kalash with water and add betel leaves, betel nuts, and a coin to it. Place the kalash near the idol and cover it with a coconut. This kalash symbolizes the presence of Goddess Gauri, the mother of Lord Ganesha. You can also decorate the kalash with flowers and turmeric powder.

Step 6: Ganesh Puja
Light the diya and incense sticks and offer them to Lord Ganesha. Then, offer the prasad and perform aarti while chanting the Ganesh mantra. You can also offer your prayers and seek blessings from Lord Ganesha for a prosperous and obstacle-free life.

Step 7: Visarjan Ritual
On the last day of the festival, perform the Visarjan ritual. This involves immersing the idol of Lord Ganesha in a water body, symbolizing his return to his abode. You can also perform the Visarjan at home by pouring water on the idol and dissolving it in a bucket of water. This ritual signifies the cycle of creation and dissolution and teaches us to let go of attachments.

Step 8: Aarti and Prasad Distribution
After the Visarjan, perform a final aarti and offer the prasad to Lord Ganesha. Then, distribute the prasad among your family and friends, spreading the joy and blessings of the festival.

Ganesh Chaturthi is not just a festival; it is a celebration of faith, unity, and love. By performing Ganesh Sthapana at home, we not only honor the deity but also strengthen our bond with our family and community. This year, let us all come together and celebrate the festival with the same enthusiasm and devotion, even if it is within the confines of our homes.

In conclusion, Ganesh Sthapana at home is a beautiful and fulfilling experience that brings us closer to our culture and traditions. With this stepwise guide, we hope you
