Michigan Democrat backs Trump’s China tariffs, knocks approach as ‘chaotic’

Michigan Congresswoman Debbie Dingell recently praised President Donald Trump’s approach to dealing with China’s tariffs, but also expressed disappointment with the chaotic rollout of the tariffs. Dingell, a Democrat representing Michigan’s 12th congressional district, urged for a more comprehensive and strategic approach to tariffs in order to protect American businesses and workers.

In a recent statement, Dingell said, “I agree with President Trump that China’s unfair trade practices must be addressed. However, I am disappointed with the chaotic rollout of the tariffs. It has caused confusion and uncertainty among American businesses and workers.”

President Trump announced earlier this month that the United States would impose a 25% tariff on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods in an effort to address China’s “unfair trade practices” and protect American intellectual property. The tariffs went into effect on July 6, with an additional $16 billion of Chinese goods to be affected in the coming weeks.

While Dingell supports the President’s efforts to hold China accountable for their trade practices, she believes that a more strategic and comprehensive approach is needed in order to effectively address the issue.

“We need a strategic and comprehensive approach to tariffs in order to protect American businesses and workers,” Dingell emphasized. “This means working closely with our allies, carefully evaluating the impact of tariffs on our economy, and utilizing all the tools we have at our disposal.”

Dingell also expressed concern that the tariffs could lead to a trade war, which could have detrimental effects on the American economy. “We have to be careful not to escalate the situation and end up in a trade war. This could have serious consequences for American businesses, workers, and consumers,” she said.

The Michigan Congresswoman also stressed the importance of working with countries like Canada, Mexico, and the European Union who are also affected by the tariffs imposed by China. “We should be working together with our allies to address China’s trade practices, rather than imposing tariffs on each other,” Dingell stated.

Dingell’s approach echoes that of many other lawmakers who have expressed concern with the current trade strategy. In an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal, Ohio Senator Rob Portman wrote, “The longer these tariffs are in place, the greater the chance that they will hurt American workers and push our economy into a slowdown or even a recession.”

Dingell also urged for a more long-term and strategic solution instead of relying on short-term tariffs. She emphasized the need for a comprehensive trade policy that includes addressing currency manipulation and investing in domestic infrastructure and workforce development.

“We need to address the root cause of the issue rather than just imposing tariffs,” Dingell explained. “We must ensure that American workers have the skills and training they need to compete in the global economy.”

In conclusion, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell praised President Trump’s approach to China’s tariffs, but also highlighted the need for a more comprehensive and strategic approach. She stressed the importance of working with allies and finding a long-term solution to address China’s trade practices while also protecting American businesses and workers. It is evident that she, along with many other lawmakers, are committed to finding a solution that benefits the American economy in the long run.
