PRESS RELEASE: MUNICIPALITIES OF CATCHIUNGO AND CHINGUAR CONNECTED TO THE NATIONAL ELECTRIC GRID

CATCHIUNGO AND CHINGUAR MUNICIPALITIES NOW CONNECTED TO THE NATIONAL ELECTRIC GRID

On Saturday, December 14, 2024, the Ministry of Energy and Water will officially inaugurate the newly electrified networks in the municipalities of Catchiungo, in Huambo Province, and Chinguar, in Bié, marking their connection to the National Electric Grid.

To facilitate the interconnection of these locations, a 220/30 kV substation with an installed capacity of 20 MVA was constructed from January to December this year, along with the installation of 30 kilometers of medium-voltage distribution network cable.

Additionally, the project saw the installation of 15 Transformation Posts (PTs) with capacities ranging from 160 to 30/0.4 kVA, the laying of 29 kilometers of low-voltage distribution cables, the creation of 600 new public lighting points, and the establishment of 1,600 new household connections.

This initiative, part of Angola’s energy transition strategy, is expected to save the state approximately 380 million Kwanzas annually—270 million from reduced fossil fuel consumption (1,550,000 liters) and 110 million in administrative costs.

The integration of these locations into the National Electric Grid will stimulate economic and social development, improve essential services like healthcare, industry, and education, and foster local entrepreneurship.

The addition of public lighting and the expansion of household connections provide these communities with the opportunity to enjoy improved living conditions and enhanced safety.

During the inauguration ceremony, which will feature cultural and social activities, the Ministry of Energy and Water will also demonstrate Social Solidarity by donating sports equipment and clothing to the children of both municipalities.

The electrification of Catchiungo and Chinguar and their connection to the National Electric Grid represent a significant achievement and a symbol of progress, reaffirming the Government’s dedication to building a more sustainable and inclusive future for Angola.

Prior to this investment, both municipalities relied on generators and thermal plants, whose capacity was inadequate to meet the growing demand.
