Alumni and Founders of MIT Washington Summer Internship Program Reflect on Three Decades of Impact
For the past three decades, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been providing students with a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience through its Washington Summer Internship Program (WSIP). This program, which was founded in 1990, has not only impacted the lives of countless students, but also the landscape of the nation’s capital. As we celebrate its 30th anniversary, let us take a moment to reflect on the program’s impact and hear from some of its alumni and founders.
The WSIP was created with the goal of bridging the gap between academic learning and practical experience. It offers students the chance to spend a summer in Washington D.C., working in various government agencies, non-profit organizations, and private companies. This hands-on experience allows students to apply their knowledge in a real-world setting, while also gaining valuable skills and insights that will benefit them in their future careers.
Over the past three decades, the WSIP has welcomed over 2,000 students from different backgrounds and disciplines. We were able to provide our students with a virtual experience that was just as impactful as our in-person program,” says Professor John Smith, one of the program’s founders.
