Mercedes F1 boss says claim the team is sabotaging Hamilton is groundless ‘online abuse’

Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff has spoken out against claims that the team is deliberately sabotaging Lewis Hamilton’s chances at winning races. In an interview with Autoblog, Wolff addressed the online abuse that has been directed towards the team and Hamilton, stating that the accusations are completely groundless.

The controversy surrounding Mercedes and Hamilton started after the Canadian Grand Prix, where Hamilton was given a five-second penalty for rejoining the track in an unsafe manner. This penalty ultimately cost him the race, with his teammate Valtteri Bottas taking the win instead. This sparked a wave of criticism and accusations that the team was intentionally trying to sabotage Hamilton’s chances at winning.

However, Wolff was quick to dismiss these claims, stating that the team is fully committed to giving both of their drivers equal treatment and opportunities to succeed. He also addressed the online abuse that has been aimed at the team and Hamilton, stating that it is unacceptable and has no place in the sport.

It is no secret that Hamilton has faced his fair share of criticism and backlash throughout his career. Being a six-time world champion, he is no stranger to being in the spotlight and receiving both praise and criticism. However, the recent attacks towards him and the team have crossed a line, with some even resorting to racial slurs and insults.

Wolff emphasized the importance of respecting all drivers and teams, regardless of their performance or results. He stated that the sport is about competition and pushing each other to be the best, but it should never involve personal attacks and abuse.

In a statement, Mercedes also addressed the issue, stating that they are fully committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment for their team and fans. They also called for an end to the online abuse and urged fans to focus on the sport and its positive aspects.

It is not the first time that Mercedes has faced accusations of favoritism towards one of their drivers. In the past, there have been similar claims made against the team when Hamilton was battling for the championship with his former teammate Nico Rosberg. However, Wolff has always maintained that both drivers are given equal opportunities and that the team’s main focus is on winning races and championships.

Despite the recent controversy, Mercedes remains the dominant team in Formula 1, with Hamilton leading the championship standings and the team comfortably ahead in the constructor’s standings. This only further proves that the team’s success is a result of hard work, dedication, and teamwork, rather than any form of sabotage.

In conclusion, it is time for the online abuse and baseless accusations to come to an end. The sport of Formula 1 is about passion, competition, and pushing the limits, and it should not be tainted by such negativity. As fans, we should all focus on supporting our favorite drivers and teams and enjoying the excitement and thrill of each race. Let us leave behind the toxic behavior and come together to celebrate the sport that we all love.
