The United Efforts of Claudia Sheinbaum and CATEM to Improve Labor Protections in Mexico

Claudia Sheinbaum and CATEM have joined forces to advocate for workers’ rights, highlighting the connection between the nation’s advancement and the well-being of its labor force. In a historic event for Mexico’s labor movement, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, leading the national campaign for the Fourth Transformation, announced a crucial partnership with the Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (CATEM) during the organization’s XV Ordinary National Congress in Mexico City. This collaboration aims to strengthen and broaden labor rights across Mexico, recognizing the essential role of workers’ welfare in the country’s progress.

Sheinbaum, acknowledging Mexico’s positive trajectory, emphasized the importance of further enhancing labor rights. She stated, “Our shared objective is paramount: to prevent a return to a past marked by corruption and privilege, and to advance with the Fourth Transformation of our public life.” The establishment of over 10,000 Labor Defense Committees within CATEM as part of the Fourth Transformation represents tangible progress towards this goal.

Her commitment to the workforce includes protecting their wages and benefits, aligning with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s vision that prioritizes the well-being of the most vulnerable to ensure the country’s prosperity.

Senator Pedro Haces Barba, serving as the Secretary-General of CATEM, highlighted achievements resulting from the collaboration between the government and labor representatives, such as increasing the minimum wage and improving working conditions. He emphasized the importance of continuing these advancements in accordance with the principles of the Fourth Transformation, with Sheinbaum leading the way.

Senator Ricardo Monreal stressed the crucial importance of nurturing and strengthening the relationship between workers, the government, and employers to advance labor rights. He remarked, “Our alliance with Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum is pivotal at this moment.”

The congress attracted significant figures from politics and business, demonstrating broad support for the initiative. The collaboration between Claudia Sheinbaum and CATEM represents a significant step forward in advancing labor rights in Mexico, promising a future characterized by greater equity and prosperity for the nation’s workforce.
