‘Not hungry’ Mary Kom dissatisfied with new age athletes over no desire for greater success

Mary Kom is a legend in India. However, the boxing great has gone on to claim that young athletes of the country, aka the new generation are not hungry. Mary Kom has claimed that young generation athletes become contented after becoming champion for one time and then go on to lose their hunger.

That however is not the case with Mary. She has claimed that she is super fit and wants to achieve more and more, all courtesy of her unsatiable hunger.

“I am super fit, I want to achieve more and more, that hunger I have. This young generation, they (become) one (time) champion and finished, they are satisfied, (they) settle down. This is the difference. If, like me, they have that spirit and that hunger, we will have so many medals in our country,” said Mary Kom in an event, as reported by PTI.

The 6 time World Champion has expressed her desire and hunger to achieve more success in the coming years. She has claimed that she is super fit. Her fighting spirit is still intact and even at the age of 41 years, she wants to continue more.

“I will fight (on), that fighting spirit only Mary Kom has… I have that something unique from other sports stars. I am 41 years (old), I cannot fight any international (amateur) competition from this year because there is that age limit. But I want to continue for one, two or three years,” she said.

Happy with next crop of Mary Koms

Mary Kom can be claimed to be a benchmark in women’s boxing in the country. Her hard work and success has paved the way for the next generation of young girls to take up boxing.

“My hard work has paid off and now there are so many Mary Koms coming up. I feel so proud to be a girl, a mother, an Indian… so many are following my footsteps. Training is tough. Inner hunger and drive are most important. Now, facilities are better. In 2001 when I started my career, no one knew women in boxing,” she concluded.
