On This Day, 40 years ago: When Gavaskar overtook Bradman

Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar became the most successful Test player by overtaking the crown from Don Bradman as the player with most centuries in Test cricket. He scored his 30th Test century against West Indies in 1983.

This record was later broken by another Little Master Sachin Tendulkar with the highest Test hundred of 51.

Sunil Gavaskar, in his career, scored 10,122 runs in 125 Tests at an outstanding average of 51.12. He bagged 34 hundred in his illustrious career with 45 half-centuries.

The Little Master has also played ODIs where he has smashed 3,092 runs in 108 matches. Notably, He has only one hundred in ODIs.

In the match, Gavaskar went on to score unbeaten 236 runs powering India to declare at 451/8 in their first innings. Ravi Shastri and Syed Kirmani also struck fifties in the match.

The match resulted in a draw with West Indies posting 313 & 64/1 in their two innings respectively.
