Soul Dead At 80

Daily Mail reported that Soul’s death was confirmed by his devastated wife Helen Snell, who took to social media to reveal the news to fans.

“David Soul – beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother – died yesterday after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family,” Snell said.

“He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend,” she continued. “His smile, laughter and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched.”

Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1943, Soul was best known for playing Detective Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson alongside Paul Michael Glaser’s Detective Dave Starsky on the television show “Starsky & Hutch,” which ran for four seasons on ABC from 1975 until 1979. The program featured the title characters fighting crime on the streets of the fictional Bay City, California in a bright red Gran Torino, with Antonio Fargas playing their informant, who was known as Huggy Bear.

Soul was also a popular pop star during his heyday, scoring a number one hit in the U.S. and U.K. with his catchy 1976 ballad “Don’t Give Up On Us Baby.”

Soul’s Life In The U.K.

Prior to his death, Soul lived in London with Snell, his fifth wife who he met while touring the U.K. in a 2002 stage production of the show “Deathtrap.” Soul obtained British citizenship back in 2004, according to the BBC, and he was open about his love for living in the U.K., previously saying that he “wanted to spend the rest” of his life there.

“Britain is beautiful. I like south Devon a lot, the bleakness of Dartmoor,” Soul once said. “And I like being in a country steeped in history. I return to the States about three times a year as my five sons all live there, though my daughter lives here.”

“When Paul Michael Glaser and I were filming Starsky & Hutch in the 70s, Princess Margaret once came to meet us on the set because she liked the show,” he continued. “We took her to lunch and, suffice to say, we didn’t go back to work in the afternoon. Also we were told the Queen Mother once said, ‘I like those boys so much!’”

“But I don’t think I’ll ever be Sir David, even though I act like it sometimes!” Soul concluded. “The only person I’d care to call me Sir David is my wife, as I call her Lady Helen!”

Soul’s Later Career

Both Soul and Glaser had cameos in the 2004 big-screen remake of Starsky & Hutch, which starred Ben Stiller as Starsky and Owen Wilson as Hutch. Soul also recently enjoyed success playing the late talk-show host Jerry Springer in “Jerry Springer – The Opera” in London’s West End.
