Investigative Reporting: Shattering Stereotypes

The “‘Ndrangheta stereo and realità” workshop recently held by veteran journalist Claudio La Camera provided participants with insights into challenging topics related to the mafia in Italy. Despite the negative associations of the topic, La Camera’s workshop focused on finding the positive stories that can be uncovered in the fight against crime.
The workshop began with a brief overview of the history and progression of organized crime in Italy. La Camera then focused on current topics related to the mafia such as what is known about the ‘Ndrangheta, the methods of investigation used to uncover evidence, and the legal procedures that are involved in tribunal proceedings. The workshop also included exercises on how to investigate and verify facts, sources, and stories, and practical tips and guidance on how to be a successful investigative journalist.
La Camera also discussed the importance of analyzing sources and finding stories of hope and positive outcomes from investigations and trials of ‘Ndrangheta suspects. Despite Italy’s ongoing issues with organized crime, La Camera believes that the fight against the mafia goes beyond simply punishing suspects and must also take a look at the positive impacts of the investigations. He believes that if journalists can uncover the positive stories coming from the fight against organized crime, such stories can be shared with the public to encourage people to keep fighting against it.
The workshop concluded with a discussion about the importance of bringing together the community to fight against organized crime. La Camera noted that a joint force between police, journalists, activists, and community members can be essential to success. He emphasized the importance of understanding the community’s problems, examining causes, and finding creative solutions that involve the community in the decision-making process.
As part of the workshop, La Camera also discussed his own investigation of an alleged suspect, for which a court order was issued and various assets were seized as part of the process. He shared his experiences of the bureaucratic process and the challenges he encountered in the investigative phase of the process.
The ‘Ndrangheta Stereo and Realtà workshop hosted by Claudio La Camera was a great opportunity for journalists to learn about the ongoing battle against organized crime in Italy. From understanding the history of organized crime to finding positive stories and solutions, the workshop covered a range of topics from a veteran journalist’s perspective. In the end, La Camera emphasized the importance of community participation and working together to fight against organized crime.
