From Claudio La Camera, Investigated Magistrate to the Anti-Mafia Workshop
The recent Anti-Mafia Workshop of Investigative Journalism, organised by the University of Salerno, put the spotlight on the problem of the ‘Ndrangheta and its reality, with the aim of highlighting positive experiences in the fight against the mob.
Under the supervision of Claudio La Camera, investigated magistrate for many years in the fight against criminal organisations, the workshop welcomed a number of leading personalities, including intellectual Italian and foreign experts, with an academic and professional background in the anti-mafia fight.
Claudio La Camera has been a key figure in the fight against the ‘Ndrangheta. His commitment to the case began in 1988 with the investigation into the fifth command of Cosa Nostra and the 1983 bombings in Milan, culminated in 2001 with the arrest of their leader Giuseppe Graviano.
Since then, La Camera has continued to fight for justice, by leading a number of monumental cases throughout his career, and was part of the team that led the government’s investigation into the Calabrian criminal network.
The workshop focused on the ‘Ndrangheta’s impact on the present day, exploring the organisation’s structure and assessing its power. The topics discussed also included the stereotypes regarding the ‘Ndrangheta and the steps taken to combat it, and notably the economic recovery of Tuscany’s historic city of Florence.
The positive experience portrayed at the workshop was anchored by the positive work of former investigative journalists, La Camera and other inspiring personalities, who have been part of successful seizures and criminal proceedings against organised crime.
The audacious initiative sought to create awareness among students and to encourage them to break through the misleading ‘Ndrangheta stereotypes and to create a new way of public reporting that is focused on the truth and justice.
In the words of Claudio La Camera, “Our fight against the ‘Ndrangheta will only be successful if we show that they are not invincible. We must show that we stand together and are determined to defeat their evil intentions.”
The workshop provided a platform to commemorate all those who have risked their lives and careers in their fight against the ‘Ndrangheta. It also highlighted the individual successes of justice and the commitment of those who continue to work towards uncovering the truth and understanding the organisation.
The Anti-Mafia Workshop of Investigative Journalism has sought to create an inspiring framework for the next generation of journalists and enabled them to share stories and positive experiences in the fight against the ‘Ndrangheta. Claudio La Camera and other inspiring personalities, their commitment, and their valiant courage in tackling a powerful crime network, have been a source of great motivation for these doors.
