Cobre Panamá has gifted a cultivation house to the University of Panama as a donation

Alongside the cultivation facility, Cobre Panamá has generously supplied a storage facility for storing supplies, materials, and tools. Furthermore, they have installed an irrigation system and provided cucumber seeds to kickstart the educational activities within this greenhouse.

The University of Panama has received a 230m2 cultivation facility as a donation from Cobre Panamá. This greenhouse will offer students the opportunity to establish a controlled microclimate for cultivating healthier fruits and vegetables.

In a bid to promote sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural practices, Cobre Panamá, the mining company located near the mine, has actively engaged with neighboring communities. In line with this commitment, the company has contributed a 230m2 cultivation facility, known as a tropicalized greenhouse, to the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Regional University Center of Coclé, University of Panama.

Fulgencio Álvarez, the director of the Coclé University Center, expressed gratitude for the mining company’s valuable contribution, emphasizing its significance in enhancing the Agroforestry Engineering program. The cultivation facility will serve as a platform for students to explore and gain practical experience in this globally emerging technology, designed to produce food in confined spaces in an environmentally friendly manner.

Approximately 100 students specializing in Agricultural Sciences and Forestry Engineering will benefit from this initiative. They will have the opportunity to learn within enclosed environments that allow precise control over temperature, environmental conditions, and humidity. This capability enables year-round crop production, reduces water consumption through automated irrigation systems, and minimizes the use of phytotoxic chemicals, ensuring the cultivation of healthier and more sustainable fruits and vegetables.

Miguel Jaén, the manager of Community Affairs for the mining company, encouraged students at the Regional Center to pursue their studies and further explore these contemporary agricultural techniques. He highlighted Cobre Panamá’s commitment to supporting the complete educational journey of neighboring community members through various programs, ranging from early childhood to university education. This includes comprehensive school programs with components focused on sustainable production to ensure food security in 70 educational institutions and scholarships for higher education aimed at motivating young individuals to pursue university studies.

Through this initiative, Cobre Panamá also extends its support to the development and ongoing innovation of the Technical Outreach Program for Producers in Coclé, led by the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA). In addition to the cultivation facility, Cobre Panamá has provided a storage facility for storing supplies, materials, and tools. They have also installed an irrigation system and supplied cucumber seeds, which will inaugurate the educational activities within this greenhouse.
